Research Projects

Some of the research works I undertook during UG internships or as a part of undergraduate coursework.

A CFD-based framework to improve building codes by accounting for climate-change

University of Toronto
(May 2019 - August 2020)

Wind loads created by high-speed winds can not only reduce the structural integrity of high-rise buildings over time, which can be catastrophic but can also cause human-discomfort due to structural-vibrations. This project aims at providing a novel framework to modify the existing building codes and facilitate resilient construction, by accounting for the ever-changing climate and its effect on future wind-speeds. The proposed multi-disciplinary framework integrates our present understanding of the anthropogenic climate change with computational wind engineering to facilitate viable adaptation strategies given the uncertain future climate.

Multiphase flow simulation using CLSVOF methods

IIT Kanpur
(May 2020 - June 2020)

What if you could trace the motion and shape of an air-bubble inside sloshing water? Interesting? I think so! This project aims at simulating three-dimensional, two-phase flows using an improved Coupled Level Set and Volume-of-Fluid (CLSVOF) method (Sussman and Puckett, 2000).

Flow-Induced Vibration of a bridge model

IIT Kanpur
(May 2018 - July 2018)

Have you heard about the infamous Tacoma Narrows bridge collapse incident of 1940? To prevent such incidents, design engineers and aerodynamicists need to ensure that the structural integrity of bridges will be maintained when flow-induced vibrations occur, and suggest improvements in design, aiming to reduce the amplitude of such vibrations. This project aims at analyzing the 'resonance' behaviour of one such bridge model.

Course titleProblem statementResources
CFD and heat transfer Solved for steady flow in an asymmetric channel with sudden expansion on one side using stream function-vorticity formulation. Utilized implicit, first order upwind finite difference approach by constructing the successive substitution (Gauss-Seidel) formula.
Advanced CFD Solved for flow inside a 3D lid-driven cavity for various Reynolds numbers using RK3-CN method. Utilized Multigrid method in combination with Gauss-Seidel.
Machine Learning Predicting future citation counts of a publication using its Abstract and the time series of citations received from the 1st to the 10th year of its publication.
Machine Learning with Graphs Demonstrated the ability of Graph Neural Network (GNN) to learn the complex dynamics of interacting particles in an enclosed space by testing on several well-known GNN architectures.
